Mrityunjay Mahadev Temple Varanasi

Lord Shiva is present in every form and in every age. This is why people say that every particle of Kashi is filled with the divine presence of Shiva. Human life has two important milestones, one is birth and second is death. Once a person is born, the one eternal truth is death. Everyone knows this, yet most of us live with the fear of it.

The deity who is believed to free devotees from the fear of death is known as Mrityunjay Mahadev, the Conqueror of Death. Today, we are exploring the ancient Mrityunjay Mahadev Temple, located in the Dara Nagar area of Visheshwarganj, Varanasi.

According to Chapter 97 of the Kashi Khand in the Skanda Purana, the sacred Shiva Lingam established near Kaleshwar is known as Mrityunjayeshwar Shiva Lingam (मृत्युंजयेश्वर शिवलिंग) , whom devotees worship as Mrityunjay Mahadev. The Kashi Khand also refers to Him as Apamrityu Hareshwar, meaning the Lord who protects devotees from untimely death. (अपामृत्यु हरेश्वर अर्थात् अकाल मृत्यु को हरने वाले भगवान)

It is believed that those whose birth charts indicate the possibility of premature death, harm from enemies, or the influence of challenging planetary combinations should worship Mahamrityunjay Mahadev in Kashi and chant the sacred Mahamrityunjay Mantra. Devotees believe that this worship brings divine protection, peace, and strength to overcome life’s difficulties.

The Mahamrityunjay Temple opens daily at 4:00 AM and remains open until night. However, the temple doors are closed several times during the day for the special adornment (Shringar) and food offerings (Bhog) to God Shiva.

Within the temple complex is the famous Dhanvantari Well (Dhanvantari Koop), whose water is traditionally believed to possess medicinal and healing properties.
