Durga Mandir Ramnagar Varanasi

Today, we are exploring the famous Ancient Durga Temple of Ramnagar, Varanasi. This historic temple is located behind the PAC Headquarters in Ramnagar Varanasi Uttar Pradesh and is considered one of the oldest and most important temples dedicated to Goddess Durga in the region.

The construction of the temple was initiated by Kashi Naresh Raja Balwant Singh during his reign between 1738 and 1783. Later, the temple was completed by Maharaja Chet Singh.

For centuries, this temple has been regarded as a powerful center of Shakti Worship and devotion to Goddess Durga.

Unique Architecture of the Temple

The temple is famous for its beautifully carved walls and artistic paintings that reflect the rich cultural heritage of Kashi. The artwork also highlights the city’s deep connection with music, art, and spirituality.

The temple was built using Chunar sandstone, a material widely used in many historical structures around Varanasi.

In front of the temple lies a large Pushkarini (sacred pond), which adds to the beauty and peaceful atmosphere of the temple complex.

Temples Inside the Complex

As soon as devotees enter through the main gate, they first receive the blessings of Goddess Annapurna.

Within the temple premises, visitors can also find:

  • A shrine dedicated to Goddess Chhinnamastika
  • A small temple of Lord Shani
  • A shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva

These sacred temples make the complex an important spiritual destination for devotees.

Special Darshan of Goddess Durga

One of the most unique features of the Ramnagar Durga Temple is that the Garbhagriha (inner sanctum) opens only twice a year:

  • During Chaitra Navratri
  • During Sharadiya Navratri

For the rest of the year, the sanctum remains closed.

Therefore, devotees who wish to have a direct and close darshan of Goddess Durga should visit during the Navratri festivals.

Interesting Legend of the Temple

According to local belief, the temple was originally dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

However, due to certain unusual and unexplained events that reportedly occurred within the temple premises, the royal priests advised the rulers to dedicate the temple to Goddess Durga instead.

Following their guidance, the temple was transformed into a Durga shrine and has remained so ever since.

Goddess Durga as Mahishasuramardini

The presiding deity of the temple is Goddess Durga in her Mahishasuramardini form, symbolizing the victory of good over evil.

Devotees visit this sacred temple to seek courage, protection, strength, and divine blessings from the Mother Goddess.
