We are exploring the ancient Shri Gauri Kedareshwar Temple in Kashi (Varanasi). It is believed to be older than the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple, making it one of the most sacred Shiva temples in the ancient city of the world..
The temple was established in the late 16th century by the South Indian saint Shri Kumar Swami. During the 17th century, when Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s army attacked many temples in Kashi, this temple was also attacked. Even today, devotees believe that the marks of that attack can still be seen on the statue of Nandi, Lord Shiva’s sacred bull.
Despite the attack, the temple survived. Later, in the 18th century, Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore renovated and restored the temple.
Today, Shri Gauri Kedareshwar Temple is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for devotees from South India. Many South Indian and Bengali pilgrims visit this temple along with Kashi Vishwanath Temple during their spiritual journey.
Why Is This Temple is Unique?
Unlike most Shiva temples, you will not find a traditional Shiva Lingam here.
Lord Shiva is worshipped in a unique Khichdi (rice and lentil dish) form.
According to ancient stories, King Mandhata, a great devotee of Lord Shiva, offered Khichdi to the Lord on the holy festival of Makar Sankranti. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva manifested here in the form of Khichdi and has been worshipped in that form ever since.
The Sacred Shivling:
The sacred Shivling is believed to have two divine sections:
- One part represents Goddess Gauri (Parvati) and Lord Shiva.
- The other part represents Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi.
This unique belief makes the temple a symbol of the unity of both Shaivism and Vaishnavism.
Daily Worship and Annabhishekam Festival
Every day, Khichdi is offered to Lord Shiva as a sacred offering (Bhog).
During the annual Annabhishekam Festival, the entire Shivling is beautifully covered with cooked rice, creating a rare and spiritually significant ritual that attracts many devotees.
Spiritual Importance
It is believed that if a devotee is unable to travel to Kedarnath Temple in the Himalayas but worships at Shri Gauri Kedareshwar Temple, they receive spiritual merit (Punya) equal to visiting Kedarnath Dham Uttrakhand.
For this reason, the temple is considered one of the holiest Shiva temples in Kashi.

Shri Gauri Kedareshwar Temple is located above the steps of Kedar Ghat, one of the oldest and most sacred ghats in Varanasi.
