How Tulsidas Met Hanuman Ji
Following the spirit’s instructions, Tulsidas one day noticed a man suffering from leprosy sitting quietly on the banks of the Ganga.
He soon realized that the man was none other than Lord Hanuman in disguise.
Moved by Tulsidas’s unwavering devotion, Lord Hanuman revealed his divine form and blessed him with his sacred darshan.
After this miraculous event, Tulsidas established the Sankat Mochan Temple on the banks of the Assi River in Varanasi.
The Unique Idol of Hanuman Ji
One of the most unique features of the temple is that the idol of Lord Hanuman is made of sacred clay (earth) rather than stone or metal.
According to temple tradition, when Lord Hanuman disappeared after giving darshan to Tulsidas, only sacred soil remained at that spot.
Using that holy clay, Tulsidas himself is believed to have created the idol of Sankat Mochan Hanuman Ji.
Unlike most Hanuman temples, the idol here does not display the full body. Devotees mainly see the divine face of Lord Hanuman.

During the 1900s, the temple was expanded and developed into its present form by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, the founder of Banaras Hindu University (BHU).
